UK/US Box office Report February 19th-21st 2016

Top 5 Breakdown

1. Deadpool – £5,681,035 – total £25,853,246

 2D – £5,247,481 total £23,513,133 – IMAX £433,554 total £2,340,113

Not including previews down only 42.9% from opening weekend (58.5% including previews) compared to last year Fifty Shades of Grey dropping 66% in its second weekend. Was boosted by a strong Friday box office far better than many due to being half term. Taking £6.45m Mon-Thurs.

In comparison with last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron which had a similar 52.2% drop second weekend took £8.6m with total of £32.3m compared with Avengers Assemble £29.85m but as a third of their box office came from 3D Deadpool is ahead of both £22.61 and £20.9m

It will shortly become 20^th Century Fox’s biggest Marvel film in the UK beating £27.1m of X-Men Days of Future Past.

It is currently the 10th biggest comic-book adaption in the UK but shortly overtake Spider-Man 2 £26.72m), Guardians of The Galaxy £28.5m) and Spider-Man £29.03m all benefited from 12As and 3D surcharges. Deadpool is likely to take upwards of £40m

X-Men Days of Future Past dropped 50% including previews in May 2014 taking £3.516m in its second weekend with a total of £19.471m but included £8.79m from 3D and had the lower 12A certificate.

Will likely hold well this coming weekend but likely to lose top spot to Grimsby if performs similar to Sacha Baron Cohen’s previous 2012’s The Dictator £4.97m (including two days of previews). 2009’s Bruno £5m and 2006’s Borat opened with £6.2m.

The pressure is now on X-Men: Apocalypse in May to beat Deadpool and Gambit after the production delays and similar to Deadpool was a project Channing Tatum pushed Fox to make Rupert Wyatt dropped out due to direct but was replaced by Doug Liman due to scheduling conflicts

20th Century Fox have had an incredible start of 2016 with The Revenant £21m, Deadpool £25m and Alvin with £13m along with Golden Globe and BAFTA wins (and likely Oscar) for The Revenant. With Kung Fu Panda, X-Men: Apocalypse, Independence Day 2 and Ice Age 5 still to come. 

2. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip – £3,544,752 – total £13,141,848

While most will be looking in amazement at the performance of Deadpool more incredible was Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip £5.310m Mon-Thurs box office especially for a film that was slated by critics and adults.

Its weekend box office was down 17.3% from last weekend’s preview inflated opening weekend but was up 37% comparing weekends against each other this was of course helped by Fridays half term box office. 

After two weeks on release

Alvin and the Chipmunks – December 2007 – £3.653m

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel – December 2009 – £12.59m

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked – December 2011 – £5.652m

Hard to compare as sequels 2&3 had more previews while 3 was also released in 3D while others weren’t but anyway you look at it the fourth film to perform other films especially with the negativity surrounding the films is incredible.

The Road Chip has already become third biggest Alvin movie in the UK and will soon overtake Chipwrecked £14m but being now reliant on weekend matinees and with studio stalemate Kung Fu Panda 3 opening in three weeks with previews in two the only thing stopping The Road Chip becoming the biggest Alvin movie in the UK.

In the US the films have become less successful as the series has gone on with The Road Chip taking $84m compared with over $217m for the first and The Road Chip was seen as the final film of the series.

3. How to Be Single – £1,874,218 – NE

Warner Bros originally dated How to Be Single for last weekend but with the Deadpool and Zoolander 2 double decided to delay it a week and instead hold Valentine’s Day previews (taking £404,233) which turned out to be a good decision.

Its opening with the previews is similar to Liz Tuccillo’s previous novel adaption He’s Just Not That into You opened with £1.9m in 2009 but with the stronger ensemble cast it had.  But was far from Valentine’s Day which opened with £3,732,393 in 2010.

Rebel Wilson generated much media coverage after making fun of the Oscars diversity row at the BAFTAs last weekend.

Reviews have been mixed with many describing it as a sorta prequel to Sex and the City will face tough competition against long delayed Grimsby that also co-stars Rebel Wilson. 

4. Goosebumps £1,309,547 – total £7,555,681

 2D took £1,258,675 – total £6,552,731 – 3D took £50,872 – total £1,003,130

Up 22% from last weekend thanks to half term weekend taking £2.067m Mon-Thurs was surprisingly overshadowed by Alvin as Goosebumps received far better reviews and after opening a week earlier and targeting an older audience would have expected a stronger half-term week.

Will unlikely get close to Jack Black’s previous film with director Rob Letterman Gulliver’s Travels which took £15.23 in 2010 as it will now be limited to weekend matinee performances and also as Jack Black is back in two weeks’ time in Kung Fu Panda 3. 

After Hotel Transylvania 2 took almost £20m last October Sony would have expected Goosebumps to do far better but was incredibly overshadowed by Alvin and the Chipmunks.

5. Dad’s Army – £814,236 – total £6,873,586

Having a good half term week taking £2m Mon-Thurs but not as impressive as the other top four which younger audiences were more interested in.

Likewise, after three weekends far from recent “grey pound” films which it had been compared to The Lady in the Van had taken £9,036,006 and The Second Best Marigold Hotel £11,714,032 but more similar to Las Vegas which had taken £6,276,732.

Weekend box office was down 37.4% similar to its previous weekend its box office performance mirrors the average muted response it received critically.

After so much hype and expectations surrounded the much loved TV show film was disappointing; last week we got to see the first teaser for long in development Absolutely Fabulous Movie out in July. In August Ricky Gervais is back as David Brent in Life on the Road while US show ended only 3 years ago its 13 years since UK original ended. Life on the Road has been given lucrative Inbetweeners mid-August release date with rival distributors surprisingly avoiding opening against it.

This weekend’s top 10 box office took £10,481,241 – down 58.1% from last weekend £24,988,211 and down 27.2% from same weekend last year. (£14,396,437) when The Wedding Ringer with £986,123 and Project Almanac £864,768 opened.

This weekend last year opened The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel £3,733,969, Focus £1,905,729, The Boy Next Door £406,171 and It Follows £366,382.
