UK and US Box office Report December 11th- 13th 2015

Top 5 Breakdown

1. The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 – £1,284,541 – £25,494,848

2D £1,237,401 total £21,631,751 – 3D took £47,139 total £3,863,098

Down 42.5% in its fourth weekend became the first film since Les Misérables in January 2013 to stay at number 1 for 4 weeks.

Likely to drop 60%+ this weekend against The Force Awakens will come short of Mockingjay Part 1 and Catching Fire; it’s surprising Part 2 hasn’t done as well as the first part as most people who have seen it said its on par with the first film.

But since advance tickets went on sale for The Force Awakens most regular releases have underperformed as in the US with audiences saving up to see it.

2. The Good Dinosaur – £1,271,733 – total £6,747,282

2D took £1,172,615 – total £5,893,220 – 3D took £99,118 – total £854,061

Down only 25.1% in its third weekend only £12,808 between the top two films (by the time final box office comes in later today it could top the chart).

With Snoopy and Charlie Brown: A peanuts Movie currently disappointing over weekend previews and Christmas holidays starting on Friday The Good Dinosaur is likely to have a strong two weeks attracting the younger cinemagoers.

Won’t of course get close to the likes of Inside Out or Minions but could possibly get close to 2011’s £15.62m Cars 2.

3. Spectre – £806,063 – total £91,866,774

2D took £668,709 total £84,173,503 – IMAX £137,353 – total £7,693,271

Down 34.7% in its seventh weekend at the same time Skyfall took £1.42m taking £96.3m.

Only £2.64m away from overtaking Avatar to becoming the second biggest film in the UK will be just too much for it to manage with it again likely to drop 60% this weekend.

This is similar to how Jurassic World was only $6.3m away this summer from overtaking Titanic as the second biggest film in the US; shows films might be opening bigger but they are not lasting as long. Many are predicting The Force Awakens to open with £30m+ this weekend but it still won’t likely overtake Skyfall even though many are predicting otherwise who were the same people that predicted Spectre would beat Skyfall.

4. Bridge of Spies – £782,029 – total £5,428,199

Holding well down 27.6% in its third week if it can manage to hold on to its screens it is likely to play well through Christmas against that other film have mentioned many times already.

Holding similar to Steven Spielberg’s last film Lincoln dropped 41% in its third weekend taking £809,196 and £5,916,579 total; while Tom Hanks Saving Mr Banks dropped 35% in December 2013 and Captain Phillips dropped 34% in October 2013.

The trailer for Steven Spielberg’s next The BFG was released last week feeling like classic Spielberg meets Harry Potter was well received online. Spielberg will also likely confirm Dreamworks will be returning back to his spiritual home Universal although his next film as a director will be Warner Bros Ready Player One that will be released in December 2017 and rumours are Indiana Jones 5 could follow.

5. Christmas with the Coopers – £467,376 – total £1,437,232

With the lack of new releases, wasn’t unexpected the top 4 would stay the same but was surprising to see after poor reviews Christmas with the Coopers was down only 31.5% in its second weekend.

The Night Before – Sony – climbed into the top 10 by default only because both Snoopy And Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie and Sisters box office taken over the weekend will be added to their openings.

This weekend’s top 10 box office took £6,170,398 down 31.9% from last weekend £9,062,765; one of the lowest weekends of 2015 (lowest was March 13-15th with top 10 grossing £5,285,471); was down 63.8% from same weekend last year. (£17,050,101);

Last year The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies opened with £9,728,584 and Tinkerbell the Legend of the Fairy’s £394,871.

This weekend last year Night at the Museum 3 opened with £1,900,000, Dumb and Dumber To £1,800,000

US Box Office

1. Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 became the third film this year to top the chart for 4 weeks (previous Furious 7 and The Martian) with The Force Awakens likely to repeat this; took $11.3m down 40.1% with total $244.4m.

2. Warner Bros In the Heart of the Sea disappointed opening with $11m; received B+ CinemaScore; was delayed from March release as Warner felt December was more suitable.
