First film since Captain America: Civil War to top the chart for three weeks. Dropping 23.2% in its third weekend will overtake Zootropolis £23.79m by next weekend.
Has become Illumination Entertainment highest grossing original animated film in the UK ahead of 2010’s Despicable Me’s £19.9m.
In comparison Minions last year after three weeks had taken £27.6m and £4.14m for the weekend but as Minions didn’t have previews The Secret Life of Pets is in its fourth week of release and its weekend box office is 34% more than Minions was but had taken 31% more in box office.
The big question this weekend is how it will hold against Ice Age: Collusion Course which has been previewing the past two weekend but were disappointing compared with previous films due The Secret Life of Pets holding strongly.
Similar to US while many sequels have underwhelmed family and animated films have been very successful and with school summer holidays starting in 10 days look to continue over the months to come.

Repeating its surprising performance in the US after receiving mixed reviews helped by the media coverage received after its UK premiere last week and Margot Robbie’s Vanity Fair interview which was branded sexist and misogynistic while Australians weren’t happy either with the country being described as “America 50 years ago”. But as Ghostbuster seems far better being talked about than not.
But with its $180m budget its box office performance is far from it being a hit but won’t be the massive flop that many were predicting. The big question will be how it holds against real competition with the equally polarized opinionated Ghostbuster reboot and Ice Age 5 this weekend.
It is hard to compare The Legend of Tarzan with other films about the story most recent was the 2013 animated film Tarzan which opened in May 2014 with £528,233 and Disney’s 1999 Tarzan which took £17.7m. But the success of The Jungle Book with trailers played before it definitely helped bring in a much bigger audience than many would have expected.

The sequel proves opening on a Monday doesn’t increase a films box office but just shares it across 7 days rather than 3 days with the sequel taking £2.95m compared with the first films £2.89m which included £1.1m from two days of previews the same weekend in July 2013.
As seen by the performance of the sequel compared to original in the US opening will be front-loaded added with the Monday opening and with Ghostbuster out this week along with Star Trek Beyond and The BFG the following weekend it is doubtful the sequel will get close to the originals £11m box office.
Was surprising eOne delayed Now You See Me 2 release from June to a far busier July but as reviews were mixed it was always likely to be a fast burner whenever it opened.

Dropping 42.3% in its second weekend after taking a strong £7.46m in its opening week over £3.4m Mon-Thurs which does again prove how Monday openers don’t increase a films box office.
Last weekend’s opening was 6% less than Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie opening in June 2014 but its second weekend was 7.6% more and is 5.7% ahead of its total box office which had taken £9.2m. Has also beaten the box office of 2013’s Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa £6.2m and Dad’s Army £8.5m.
Absolutely Fabulous received similar TV ratings on BBC1 as Mrs Browns Boys receives with over 7.5m similar box office would have been expected. Mrs Browns Boys does have a far bigger Irish fan-base. But while new episodes of Mrs Browns Boys are still being broadcast on BBC1 the last new episode was broadcast 4 years ago just before the opening of the London Olympics.
In 2014 Mrs Browns Boys managed to hold her own against the summer blockbusters staying in the top 10 for 5 weeks taking £13.9m Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie could do similar as apart from Ghostbusters the upcoming films are mostly male and family focussed.
All eyes will be on David Brent in August with Life on the Road 13 years after the original UK The Office ended Ricky Gervais acting career has been in the shadows of David Brent since and has had only one leading role in a film 2008’s flop Ghost Town.

Down 55.8% in its second weekend already becoming Kevin Hart’s biggest starring film in the UK overtaking 2016’s Ride Along 2 £5.13m and 2014’s Ride Along £4.14m.
But unlikely to top either directors biggest film in the UK 2013’s We’re The Millers £8.6m or Dwayne Johnson’s San Andreas £11.31m. (not including the Furious films)

- Universal – The Secret Life of Pets – opened $103.1m far bigger than most expected going into the weekend was expected to do around $70m received A- CinemaScore. While summer 2016 has been a disappointing year for most films family apart from The BFG has been very successful will Ice Age: Collusion Course continue success this in two weeks’ time
- Warner Bros – The Legend of Tarzan – 46.5% – $20.6m – $81.4m; after opening far bigger than expected it has held far stronger than expected it is still far from the blockbuster it needs to be but not the massive flop most expected it would be.
- Walt Disney – Finding Dory – dropped 51.3% – $20.3m – $422.5m; overtaking the originals $380.6m on July 4th and on Friday overtook Captain America: Civil War to become the biggest film of the year.
- 20th Century Fox – Mike and Dave Needs Wedding Dates – opened $16.6m; received B CinemaScore and decent reviews opening the same weekend 17 years ago American Pie opened. Was possibly looking as a potential sleeper but this is now unlikely.
- Universal – The Purge: Election Year – dropped 62.9% – $11.7m – $58.1m; performing similar to last film Anarchy opening in July 2014 being very front loaded.
- Warner Bros – Central Intelligence – dropped 35.1% – $8.1m – $108.3m; if holds as well in the coming weeks could overtake Ride Along to be Kevin Hart’s biggest film in the US.
- 20th Century Fox – Independence Day: Resurgence – dropped 53.9% – $7.7m – $91.4; after 3 weeks Independence Day had taken $199m and was still #1 taking $21.2m
- Disney – The BFG – dropped 59.5% – $7.6m – $38.7m; very sad when average animated films like The Secret Life of Pets opened with three times The BFG; did its title have hurt its box office chances as similar to Shawshank Redemption audiences were asking whats a BFG?
- Sony Pictures – The Shallows – dropped 45.3% – $4.8m – $45.8m;
- Yash – Sultan – opened $2.2m from only 283 screens less than a tenth of screens all the other films in the top 10 were being screened in.

Bleecker Street – Captain Fantastic opened with $98,451 from 4 screens; has received positive reviews since receiving its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival and then Cannes Film Festival.
