Jurassic World is the fourth part of film series based on Michael Crichton characters was originally planned for a summer 2005 release then went into development hell for 8 years until Universal announced June 13th 2014 release in January 2013. In September due to delays with the script and building of the sets release date was moved to June 12th 2015 (would be 22 years to the day first was released in the US (opened on July 16th in UK) filming finally started on April 10th 2014.
First trailer was released on November 25th many complaining on social media about poor CGI but didn’t stop it being viewed more than 5 million times in the first 48 hours. The second trailer was released in April.
Jurassic World ignores the events in sequels and will be a direct sequel to the first Steven Spielberg film. Expectations are high for film and Universal already have plans for sequels.
Jurassic Park opened in July 1993 with £4.9m dropping only 5% in its second weekend which is unheard of these days with mega-movies went on to gross £46m played in cinemas for almost a year. Its opening was only 10.6% of its final box office while Skyfall was 19.51% while Avengers Age of Ultron will be close to 40%.
Jurassic Park: The Lost World – opened July 1997 with £5.7m down only 24% its second weekend taking £3.8m was then the third biggest weekend of 1997 total £28m (20% of opening)
Jurassic Park 3 – opened July 2001 with £2,920,179 dropping a massive 62% in its second weekend with £1.8m total £16m.
Will of course be impossible to compare Jurassic World openings so long after the release of the first films but many will still do so as Jurassic Park opened at the Empire Leicester Square the same as Jurassic World will do but ticket prices were £4 now £18 up 350%. The reboot would have to open with £17.15m+ to get close to the original films opening. But these numbers won’t matter to many box office experts on Monday when they will say Jurassic World was the biggest opening of the franchise but similar to Avenger Age of Ultron‘s big opening weekend Jurassic World will open big and drop in the weeks following its opening.
In US Jurassic Park opened June 13th 1993 with $47m (14% of its total box office) Jurassic World is expected to take that in one day but original film ran in US cinemas for over 70 weeks taking 9 days to take $100m compared with Avengers Age of Ultron taking 2 days.

A crate made to hold predatory livestock by InGen Technologies has been seen in Waterloo Station last Friday. The marketing stunt received a lot of social media coverage and found its way to Reddit’s front page. The raptors escaped from the crate on Monday morning and will be a part of Universal’s marketing campaign later this week there were signs up in Waterloo Station saying that it was going to be filmed and by being their you gave Universal Pictures the permission to use you in marketing campaign.
Even though media coverage London premiere generated these days for a film unless it’s a Bond film is limited its unusual for a big summer mega-movie not to have a London premiere but as Universal Pictures proved earlier this year with Fast & Furious 7 and 20th Century Fox last year with Gone Girl and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes a film can open big without one. But they are only two of UK top ten biggest films in the last 15 months to do without a premiere. But it does ask why distributors still want to have a Leicester Square premiere? With Odeon Cinemas soon be refurbishing their Leicester Square cinema will leave the square without a cinema holding more than 700 seats distributors will have to look at alternative venues for premieres.
