UK and US Box office Report Febuary 5th -7th 2016

Top 5 Breakdown

  1. Goosebumps – £2,683,690 – NE

2D took £1,287,041 ink previews £2,114,991 – 3D took £392,089 – ink previews £568,699

Thanks to taking £968,437 in previews last weekend allowed it to open top without which would of opened behind Dad’s Army taking £1,679,130 for the weekend. After receiving UK premiere at London Film Festival last October Jack Black was in UK promoting and the film received positive reviews.

Opening was ahead of 2010’s Gulliver’s Travels Jack Black’s previous film with director Rob Letterman of £2.33m without previews went on to take £15.23m with half term holidays this weekend Goosebumps is likely to perform strongly with only Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip as its direct competition likely to attract a younger audience.

Sony held back Goosebumps from last October having Hotel Transylvania 2 its opening cannot be compared as had double amount of previews ahead of its opening.

2. Dad’s Army £2,067,827 -NE

Despite receiving huge media coverage due to the UK premiere and stars heavily promoting the film across all media the film not unexpectedly received mixed reaction from critics with many describing the film as silly rather than funny which had been seen from the silly rather than funny trailers.

Opening was far from Mrs Brown’s Boys D’Movie of £4.3m in June 2014 which is the modern day equivalent of the high rated 60s BBC TV comedy with the repeats on BBC2 still receiving 2m+ audiences; when it was first shown in received audiences of over 17 million while last year’s Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special had 9.7m audiences on BBC1.

But rather Dad’s Army is being compared with the likes of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Lady in The Van and Last Vegas which it opened similar to; but the casting of younger actors Mark Gatiss, Daniel Mays, Emily Atack, Blake Harrison alongside Bill Nighy, Tom Courtenay and Michael Gambon shows the producers were trying to attract a younger audience too.

With Zoolander 2 and Grimsby coming out in the next two weeks for the younger audience Dad’s Army will be reliant on the ‘grey pound’ if it will hold well in the coming weeks. Bu as they are more likely to read reviews than younger audiences who still came out to see Dirty Grandpa its unlikely to

The advance booking for Dads Army opening the same week as Star Wars The Force Awakens opened in October but no records were broken.

  1. The Revenant £1,212,275 – total £18,349,170

 2D took £1,115,453 – total £17,654,787 – IMAX took £96,822 – total £694,383

Dropping two places and 46.7% in its fourth weekend heavier than The Wolf of Wall Street (33%) dropped in 2014 with the arrival of Mr Peabody and Sherman and Robocop. But is still 3.3% ahead of The Wolf of Wall Street after 4 weeks.

With Leonardo DiCaprio and the film likely to win BAFTA Awards this weekend and then Oscars in two weeks’ time should see it top The Wolf of all Street’s £22.7m 2014 total.

A devoted fan made a video montage of DiCaprio and penned a musical ode to the actor, “I want to get a Little Gold Man! Little Leo, No Cry.”

Lyrics:

I once imagined winning the little gold man

So I took my acting so seriously in every film

I put my heart into every role

But how come I still have got nothing after four nominations?

“The Wolf of the Wall Street,” “Inception” and “The Aviator”

“The Departed,” “Gangs of New York,” “Django Unchained”

I made one classic after another yet still got no Oscar

An actor who hasn’t won an Oscar keeps striving for his dream

I only wish to get the little gold man to prove my talents

I have spared no effort for the highest award

Though I have lost you four times, I will keep trying

It would be OK if I can eventually win the lifetime achievement award

I’d like to be consoled by winning the little gold man

Every award ceremony is such a torture.

Although I’m popular and my films have earned boffo box office,

I still missed the Oscar so many times.

So handsome guys don’t get awards?

Little Leo, no cry!

4. Dirty Grandpa – £944,369 – total £3,656,652

Incredibly holding well in its second weekend down only 34.4% from its preview weekend box office; despite dreadful reviews but the audiences for these films ignore the critics why so many of them are often unscreened to critics which gets their knickers in a twist as they have to pay to see them with regular cinemagoers.

More surprisingly that it held its own against previews for the next silly and stupid film Zoolander 2 previews.

5. Spotlight – £860,259 – total £2,637,538

After performing strongly Mon-Thurs charting second behind The Revenant held strongly in its second weekend down only 18.4% after adding 138 screens from last weekend.  With so many new films out this weekend it likely drop down the charts but hope that the media coverage generated BAFTAs this weekend and strong word of mouth will allow it to hold its own against the onslaught.
