1. Me Before You – £1,453,859 – total £4,478,000
Dropping only 18.9% in its second weekend held surprisingly strongly despite the criticism from disability campaigner the film received and normally Young Adult adaptions are very front loaded as these films get huge social media coverage with most choosing to talk about the film rather than pay to see it in cinemas.
Two years ago The Fault in Our Stars opened similarly as counter-programming to the World Cup dropping 29% in its second weekend taking £1.69m in its second weekend and £6.69m.
But last year’s Paper Towns dropped a massive 78.1% in its second weekend (but did have 7-day opening weekend) taking £3.4m. While Me and Earl and the Dying Girl which had received great buzz from its premiere at Sundance along with good reviews and great trailers failed to find an audience opening with only £394,192.
Last weekend Me Before You would have topped the charts had it just been Fri-Sun box office included and it has continued to stay top now for every day since opening apart from June 9th.
With European Championships starting on Friday weekend box office suffered big drops over the weekend especially Saturday when England played their first match against Russia. While many English football fans were shedding the regularly tears seeing the team failed to win the game they should have won similar to every year.
Warner Bros might not have UK rights to The Nice Guys and Central Intelligence in their summer line-up but with Me Before You, The Conjuring 2 and Lights Out they have three films that could be very lucrative to them alongside Suicide Squad. The big question is how Tarzan will do against the sequels Warner screened footage recently which was well received but is another risky film for them which was why they delayed King Arthur from July till next March.
2. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – £840,868 – £4,801,767
Down 75.9% in its second weekend (46.1% not including Mon-Thurs box office)
The Euros have been used as an excuse for the poor performance of many of the films in the top 10; but The Nice Guys had one of the lowest drops of the top 10 which was targeting male audience the Euros is just an excuse for one of the poorest weekends of the year made worst as last year Jurassic World opened this weekend with a massive £19,289,562.
While the first film received very poor reviews but still held far strong down 41% in its second weekend taking £1.9m for the weekend and £7.8m. The sequel received far better reviews but audiences just weren’t interested like so many of the unwanted sequels many which have received better reviews than predecessors but far lower box office.
3. Alice Through the Looking Glass £832,914 – total £8,306,639
Boasted by Warcraft’s huge decline climbed up one place in its third weekend down 38.5% despite that good news still £2.2m away from matching Alice in Wonderland’s opening weekend in March 2010 and over 70% of its total after three weeks.
In March 2010 Alice in Wonderland took £4.8m in its third weekend taking £30.4m total.
Of course The Jungle Book and Zootropolis both over performed taking £45.1m and £25.6m. Alice Through the Looking Glass failure was another example some films are one hit wonders just because a film is a success first time around doesn’t mean needs a sequel as seen by many unnecessary sequels that have underperformed this year.
4. Warcraft: The Beginning – £728,168 – total £5,022,284
Dropping 79.9% in its telling second weekend showing how front-loaded the film was targeting its fan-base but outside from that majority weren’t interested.
Will soon become director Duncan Jones’s biggest UK performer overtaking 2011’s Source Code’s £6m but Warcraft with a 7 day opening weekend should have taken more than that in its opening weekend.
For months the film had negativity buzz similar to The Huntsman so was again a very strange decision by Universal to open both internationally first as was DOA opening in the US at the weekend.
In China Warcraft has been a massive surprise opening with $156m in its first 5 days which had helped artificially inflate its worldwide box office. Produced by Legendary Pictures now owned by Chinese conglomerate Wanda Group allowing it to avoid China’s strict import quota and be able to take a larger share of its box office but still won’t be close to the 50% rentals from US and other territories.
5. X-Men: Apocalypse – £703,505 – total £17,067,686
Down 43.7% in its fourth weekend has overtaken 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine £16.28m to become the fifth biggest film of the X-Men franchise but unlikely will be able to X-Men 3 £19.6m, X-Men 2 £20.7m.
Despite the underwhelming reception critically and box office performance for X-Men: Apocalypse 20th Century Fox have plans for a sequel which will be set in the 90s for a rumoured summer 2018 release.
2018 already has dated Black Panther, The Flash, Avengers: Infinity War Part 1, Transformers 6, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Alita: Battle Angel, Aquaman, Animated Spider-Man and several untitled comic-book films.

** The Nice Guys after having a disappointing opening last weekend as was always going to suffer against Warcraft and TMNT2 holding better as with less competition as has a chance to find its audience; similar to films like Edge of Tomorrow in 2014 which dropped 35% in its second weekend as The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in August 2015. All three were strangely dated as all had much higher profile films opening against them.

This weekend’s top 10 box office took £7,187,384 Down 102% from last weekend £14,514,631; The fourth worst weekend of the past year and the worst since the weekend before Star Wars The Force Awakens opened.
Weekend was down 231% from same weekend last year (£23,792,878) when Jurassic World £19,289,562 and London Road £210,310 opened.
This weekend 2015: Take That Live £943,100, Mr Holmes £741,000, Entourage £603,000, The Longest Ride £418,086 opened.
US Box Office
- Warner Bros – The Conjuring 2 – opened with $40.3m slightly less than the first film which opened with $41.8m in July 2013; the sequel received very good reviews and strong buzz receiving an A- CinemaScore.
- Universal Pictures – Warcraft – opened $24.3m lower than it was tracking receiving B+ will drop heavily next weekend. While many are saying how its performance is incredible in China taking $156m many don’t realise rents are less than 25% of the box office.
- Lionsgate – Now You See Me 2 – opened with $23.1m lower than the first film which opened with $29.3m are already plans for a third part but that is dependent on it getting close to the $117m first film took in May 2013; received A- CinemaScore.
- Paramount Pictures – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows – dropped $58.1m – $61.1m; in comparison the first had taken almost double $11.7m; reviews were better for the sequel but like many other sequels this year but still dropped heavily.
- 20th Century Fox – X-Men: Apocalypse – dropped 45.2% – $10m – $136.6m; in comparison Days of Future Past had taken $189.5m after three weeks’ in 2014.
- Warner Bros – Me Before You – dropped 50.8% – $9.2m – $36.8m.
- Sony Pictures – The Angry Birds Movie – dropped 34.4% – $6.7m – $98.1m.
- Walt Disney – Alice Through The Looking Glass – dropped 51% – $5.5m – $62.4m; less than Alice in Wonderland had taken after 17 days $265m
