UK & US Box Office January 29th- 31st 2016

Top 5 Breakdown

1 – The Revenant £2,273,772 – total £16,089,864

2D took £2,137,894 – total £15,543,024 – IMAX took £135,878 – total £546,840

Down 40.9% in its third weekend is continuing to perform similarly to The Wolf of Wall Street in 2014 only 4% down from its third weekend box office but its total is 7.6% ahead.

After Leonardo DiCaprio won SAG Best Actor yesterday he is likely to add BAFTA Best Actor in two weeks before finally winning his Best Actor Oscar at the end of the month will likely keep allow The Revenant to hold its own against the flood of new releases over the next two weeks.

Will lose top spot this weekend similar to The Wolf of Wall Street but should now beat The Wolf of Wall Street’s £22.7m.

2 – Dirty Grandpa – £1,440,811 -NE

Not including the £604,675 taken Monday – Thursday still opened in second place despite getting the worst reviews probably since the equally dreadful Movie 43.

Mark Kermode gave its predictable ranting review on Friday more out of the shock that it starring Robert De Niro and Zac Efron two actors he admired in the past.

Likely to drop heavily this weekend.

Lionsgate created an “gobsmacked” advert poster with made up quotes.

3 – Star Wars: The Force Awakens – £1,330,167 – total £119,424,877

(IMAX 17.2%) IMAX 3D £229,209 total £13,972,559 (11.6% of total)

Dropped 33.1% in its seventh weekend

What else can be said that hasn’t been said in the last seven weeks after holding well in the last couple of weekend will likely drop below £1m next weekend.  In comparison Avatar had 11 weeks of £1m+ weekends holding top spot till March 5th.

After speeding past $1 billion worldwide in just over a week it has taken far longer to taken $2 billion worldwide will likely stumble past this week. Most people expected it to beat Avatar and be the biggest film ever but instead it will just sneak past Titanic but it can’t be compared with a film that was released 18 years ago.

The success of Star Wars has pushed Disney ahead of Lego to the top of Brand Finance 2015 World’s Most Powerful Brands’ list.

Was announced this week its US DVD release would be on April 5th likely to be released on digital and via the Sky Store and Disney Life on March 21st in time for Easter.

4 – Ride Along 2 £1,309,774- total £4,199,897

Dropping only 38.5% in its second weekend; a few years ago would of likely dropped heavily in its second weekend but shows how the profiles of both Ice Cube and Kevin Hart have increased in the past year thanks to films like Straight Outta Compton and Get Hard.

Its box office is almost 50% more than the first film released in 2014

5 – Spotlight – £1,054,466 – NE

Since premiering at the Toronto Film Festival in September Spotlight has generated strong buzz with great reviews receiving many nominations and awards along the way including 6 Oscar Nominations and 3 BAFTA nominations.

Its opening was then slightly disappointing probably cannibalized by several films aimed at the same audience. But opening on only 241 screens it will likely expanding this coming weekend hoping to build on strong word of mouth and BAFTA awards on Sunday.

Similar to Creed many would have expected Spotlight would of opened stronger but could hold better during the week as these films often perform stronger aimed at older audiences who prefer going to cinema during the week.
